How Do You Know How Much Space You Need?  Here are some guidelines to help you get a “quick estimate” on what size you need: 

  • 5 x 8 – (40 sq. ft.) This size is about the size of a standard double size closet and can contain a couch or chair standing on end, boxes stacked, and small items.
  • 5 x 10 – (50 sq. ft.) This size is about the size of a walk-in closet and can contain, for example, a couch and a chair, bedroom set, and small items and boxes.
  • 5 x 15 – (75 sq. ft.) This size is about the size of a full bathroom and can contain, for example, a couch and dinette set, bedroom set, boxes and small items stacked.

Door widths on the units below are 8’9”, Door Height 7’10”, Ceiling Height is 9’.

  • 10 x 10 – (100 sq.ft.) This size is about the size of a small bedroom and will hold furniture (excluding major appliances) from a one-bedroom apartment.
  • 10 x 15 – (150 sq. ft.) This size could hold the contents of a two-bedroom apartment, or a motorcycle, jet ski, golf cart or sporting gear.
  • 10 x 20 – (200 sq. ft.) This is the size of a standard one size garage. It is big enough for furniture, appliances, and personal items from a two-bedroom house or a small car.
  • 10 x 25 – (250 sq.ft.) This is big enough for furniture from a two-bedroom apartment, plus boxes, bikes and some patio furniture. Small business storage for inventory.
  • 10 x 30 – (300 sq. ft.) This size could hold the contents of a three-bedroom house or provide vehicle storage with plenty of storage space left over for the contents of one or two small bedrooms, boxed. Small business storage for inventory.
  • 10 x 35 – (350 sq. ft.) This size could hold the contents of a four-bedroom house or provide vehicle storage, recreational vehicles, Small business storage.
  • 10 x 50 – (500 sq. ft.) This size is extra deep when you have a lot to store!

Units that are 12 ft. wide have a Door Width 10’5”, Door Height 8’6”,  Ceiling Height 10’5”

  • 12 x 20 – (240 sq.ft.) This size is wider and can accommodate a two-bedroom house, or provide vehicle storage, vendor or business storage.
  • 12 x 25 – (300 sq. ft.) This size unit has a wider door allowing a boat or car easier access and room. Also, a great space for vendor or business storage.
  • 12 x 30 – (360 sq. ft.) This size has a wider door for easy loading and unloading. Vehicle storage, golf cart and equipment, sports equipment, business storage.
  • 12 x 50 – (600 sq.ft.) The biggest unit of all! Vendors, Collectors, and Businesses love this size!

    Helpful Info and Packing Tips

    • Use good quality storage boxes
    • Fill boxes to capacity  Partially full or bulging boxes may tip or collapse
    • Heavy items should be packed into small boxes so that they are easy to lift
    • Label or number boxes for easy reference when you need to locate your goods
    • Make up an inventory list of your stored items and keep it in a safe place at home. This works well if you correspond the list with the numbered boxes
    • Protect your fragile goods in bubble wrap
    • Dishes and glasses should be wrapped in several layers of paper or bubble wrap before storing
    • Garden Equipment should be cleaned before storing, empty gas out of all equipment before storing
    • Wrap table legs with bubble wrap before storing
    • Place heavy or bulky items in the unit first to provide a good stacking base
    • Plan your storage space – put those items that you need to get to the most often near the front, close to the door
    • To maximize space stack similar sized boxes together
    • Always place a protective cover over your soft furnishings
    • Stack chairs seat to seat with cloth or paper to separate them
    • Leave refrigerator or freezer doors open for ventilation
    • Pictures and mirrors should be wrapped in mirror boxes, marked fragile and stacked on their end
    • Avoid stacking or leaning furniture against outside walls to aid ventilation
    • Cover your goods with dust sheets to protect against dust
    •  If you have homeowners or apartment rental insurance, you maybe able to add your storage unit to your policy. Big and Small Storage, LLC does not insure your belongings as outlined in Item four of the Rental Agreement.
